Podcasts | The importance of talking about money as a family and with seniors

Group Savings and Retirement March 21, 2024

Paul Santos, financial planner at Group Benefits and Retirement Solutions, recently participated in two episodes of the In Your Interest podcast with Sébastien Mc Mahon, Chief Strategist and Senior Economist at iA Financial Group.

Talking finances as a family

The first podcast addresses the importance of discussing finances as a family. According to Paul Santos, certain discussions must be held as a couple, in particular to

  • Get a clear picture of the family's financial situation
  • Draw up a budget showing income and expenses
  • Plan short-, medium- and long-term projects

It's also a good idea to talk about money with children, to inform them and raise their awareness of the subject, but also to help them develop a healthy relationship with it. The aim is to teach them how to manage their money, prioritize their spending and save.

Helping seniors manage their finances

The second podcast looks at the different topics to discuss with seniors, the different ways to support them and the financial pitfalls to avoid. Mathieu Gilbert and Sébastien Mc Mahon provide tips on how to

  • Avoid financial fraud
  • Adjust a budget according to age
  • Establish an optimal withdrawal strategy at retirement
  • Plan an orderly succession
