The Pharmacare Act came into force on October 10, 2024, establishing a framework to ensure universal access to certain drugs for all Canadians.
Some provinces have already announced their implementation timelines:
- Manitoba: April 15, 2025
- Prince Edward Island: May 1, 2025
- Yukon: January 2026
- British Columbia: March 2026
Other provinces are expected to announce their plans following ongoing negotiations.
Impact for group insurance drug claims
We are currently working with our pharmacy service provider to ensure that claims for covered drugs are submitted directly to the provinces.
No action is required on the part of plan administrators. The drug claim system will be operational when the new plan is implemented in each province.
We will be sending out a communiqué to group insurance plan administrators on April 21.
