Ozempic generics | Insights from our specialists

Semaglutide, marketed under the brand name Ozempic, is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. For several years now, this drug has ranked among the top 10 drugs in our group insurance plans, making it a key focus in our drug management strategies.

Our team of specialists is closely monitoring the arrival of generic versions on the Canadian market and the potential impact they will have on drug plan costs.

The recent introduction of generic versions of Ozempic in Canada could indeed mark a turning point, as generic drugs are generally available at a significantly lower price than brand-name products.

In the case of semaglutide, generic versions are available at 65% of the cost of the brand-name drug. This price difference represents significant potential savings for both patients and group insurance plans.

A picture that differs from province to province

However, the extent and timing of these savings will depend largely on the interchangeability rules in effect.

Generic substitution mechanisms and reimbursement policies vary from province to province, which directly influences the adoption of generic versions.

Savings are expected to materialize gradually, as usage shifts toward generic versions, in compliance with provincial interchangeability rules.

Our team therefore continues to monitor the situation—both in terms of costs and usage—to ensure appropriate use and sustainable management of drug plans. Further updates will follow.

We will be sending a communiqué to plan administrators on June 22.
