Asset management │Fiera Capital announces significant changes to its Canadian Equity team
Fiera Capital (“Fiera”) has announced significant developments affecting its Canadian Equity platform.
Fiera confirmed that Nessim Mansoor, Head of Canadian Equities, Tony Rizzi, Lead Portfolio Manager for Canadian Equity Strategies, Howard Leung, Portfolio Manager, and Sandra Zhang, Senior Investment Analyst, are no longer employed by the firm following an internal investigation. The firm has also initiated legal proceedings against these individuals, as well as certain other former employees. According to Fiera, the allegations include breaches of loyalty obligations, fiduciary duties and/or the firm’s code of conduct. Fiera further stated that the investigation does not involve client portfolio management activities and that no issues have been identified regarding portfolio management or the integrity of the underlying investment process. Of note, the allegations have been disclosed by Fiera and remain unresolved, subject to ongoing legal proceedings.
In response to these developments, Fiera has moved quickly to establish a new leadership structure for its Canadian Equity platform. Nicholas Smart, a long-standing member of the Canadian Equity team and existing portfolio manager on the strategy, has been appointed to lead Canadian Equity, providing continuity during the transition.
To further strengthen the platform, Fiera announced the recruitment of three experienced investment experts from Jarislowsky Fraser. Charles Nadim, currently Head of Research and Lead Portfolio Manager for Jarislowsky Fraser’s flagship Canadian equity strategy, will join Fiera as Head of Canadian Equities. He will be joined by Colin McPherson and Elena Gorbatkova, two seasoned investment experts who have worked closely with Mr. Nadim at Jarislowsky Fraser and bring extensive experience in equity research and portfolio management. Both will assume portfolio manager responsibilities within the Canadian Equity team. A separate investment update covering the changes and the impact at Jarislowsky Fraser will be published in the near future.
Fiera has stated that the investment philosophy, research framework, portfolio guidelines and governance structure supporting the Canadian Equity strategies remain unchanged.
