Group insurance eligibility for dependent children

Group Insurance May 20, 2021

It may sound cliché, but children grow up so fast… Who hasn’t felt like they go from the cradle to university in a flash? But, once they grow up, what happens to their group insurance coverage?

In most of our contracts, dependent children are eligible for group insurance coverage until 20 years of age, if they meet the following criteria:

  • Be covered by the public health insurance plan in their province of residence
  • Meet the definition of full-time Canadian resident
  • Meet the definition of a dependent child under the group insurance contract

Starting at 21 years of age, dependent children are eligible for group insurance coverage under most of our contracts if they meet the following criteria:

  • Be under 26 years of age and registered full-time at a recognized educational institution
  • Have a mental or physical disability and be unable to earn a living because of said disability, provided it was declared when the insured was a child, subject to eligibility criteria

As a result, group insurance plan members are required to contact iA Financial Group every year to confirm the full-time student status of their dependent children between 21 and 26 years of age to maintain coverage.

Since the eligibility criteria may vary in some contracts, note that plan members are invited to always consult their group insurance booklet to confirm the eligibility criteria that apply to their dependent children.

A communiqué will be sent to plan administrators on May 25 to remind them of the eligibility criteria for dependent children.

You can also read the French version of the communiqué.
